Words of Wellness

Hosted ByDaniel Anderson

We consider wellness in books and online, looking at words, metaphors, language, and concepts. Our discussion is linked with topics from a first-year seminar on the rhetoric of wellness.

Wellness Books and Authority

Host Daniel Anderson (UNC Chapel Hill) interviews four guests about reading wellness books online versus in physical form, discussing authenticity, ease of looking up terms, and how format affects engagement. The group compares how different books establish authority and genre—scientific/evidence-based reporting, coaching, and spiritual/philosophical guidance—and connects themes like contagious emotions, reading emotions on bodies, mind–body relationships, and the limits of oversimplified models. Guests share what surprised or frustrated them, including translation challenges with the Tao Te Ching and reductive frameworks like fixed vs growth mindset and happiness percentages. In a lightning round they offer lessons: identity-based mindset change, moving beyond ego to grow, happiness built through intentional actions, and awareness that feelings spread socially. They close by recommending who each book suits: Mindset (Dweck), Tao Te Ching (Laozi), The How of Happiness, and Social Intelligence (Goleman). 00:00 Welcome and Guests 00:40 Reading Online vs Print 03:09 Authority and Social Intelligence 06:26 Mind Body and Happiness Science 07:43 Spiritual Wisdom and Genre Talk 14:14 What Frustrated Readers 16:55 Lightning Round Takeaways 19:15 Self Help Identity and Community 20:53 Who Should Read Each Book 22:32 Final Thanks and Sign Off
